Figured Id start a thread here on box store or franchise stores free wifi.

Add to it if you know of any.. :D

Jack In The Box restraunts have installed RippleTV.com and part of this is free public wifi hotspots. Look in the lower left hand corner of the ceiling mounted television in the restraunt for the wifi access number. Start your browser and enter the number. jackwifi is the ssid.

Safeway stores have been installing hotspots in their stores. I hear that Starbucks corporate installed these along with the coffee stands. Just click sign in on the browser to start browsing... safewaywifi is the ssid.

Cutters Point Coffee shops (unknown ssid)

The Kitsap Mall provides mall wide wifi for their customers... Not a box store but Ill bet all the malls are doing it...

And Jim your post reminded me of Staples stores wifi.. (unknown ssid)

When I'm on the road, I usually hit a hotel parking lot for WiFi.
It's been getting more consistent. The rest areas have wifi, but you can only view the DoT homepage without paying.

and if all of you use free wifi...this here is a handy tip...

always VPN into a secure network if you dont have this with your employer check out free tools like...

monowall or pfsense includes support for the openssl protocall.
or buy something like a small ciscoASA(5505) or a juniper netscreen gt5 or a secure computing/snapgear box, or im sure that consumer (linksys/netgear) have solutions for this now just ask for the ability to have a "VPN TUNNEL" if you only have a split tunnel 'SSL VPN' steer clear you need a true blue tunnel for your traffic with a altered gateway. (you can get this with SSL solutions not just IPSEC/PPTP ...pptp stinks for security)

by tunneling your traffic 100% thru a trusted source "there is no way to hack your traffic" i quoted that because there is a lot of well,but,shoulda,coulda. however basically your safe.

if your seriously looking for more info PM me or just post up here, I also work for people that can sell you small gear for SOHO or help your company.

or just get a cell card its the only way to cruze the intertubes.

Dang, I wish I knew what you're talking about.

when you connect to a wireless network in public, there are multiple ways that the network owner or I as a "hacker" can watch what you do or steal your packets.

to overcome this "problem" you want to do something to prevent this risk, a method is to encrypt your traffic in a tunnel, you can have all your clear text or encrypted traffic, tunnel thru the unsecure network and into a secure one.

so if i try to hijack the stream of data from your laptop, i will find that its one big unreadable stream and i cant do much about that other then shut it down.

when i say "trusted network" i mean one that you feel safe on, typically your home DSL or Cable is a trusted network. people don't have the ability to watch your packets there. same with corporate its a network that you feel safe to do work on(or you don't and you buy some hardware for home, i personally architected my company network so i have all the keys and feel safe haha)

Speaking of security

Theres a product from AnchorFree called the Hotspot Shield. http://anchorfree.com/downloads/

Its loaded with some "extras" you can do with out such as the Delio spambar and some search engine spware thing but if you dont install those Im curious how secure VPNing to someone elses site (especially when they push spyware on you) is?

Ive created a VPN to my server here for stuff that needs to be secure.

Usually though I wouldnt recommend passwords n such over any wireless...

if its a open network then who cares its a published key (we are talking about hotspots public: not your house:) are you telling me that taco bells network is set up correctly, they and 80% of America do not use a 20 character complex password. I have secured far more important networks that are appallingly insecure.

I would rather not debate here what is and is not hackable there is a much better site for that http://forums.remote-exploit.org/ do this there..

i am just pointing out some security tips to people that want to collect information for free wifi networks.

well it looks like this company provides internet with use of the product in exchange for advertisement? they would do this with software or injecting ad's into the http.

I wont speak to things about this company for ethics reasons, If you choose to use this network then you should follow the guidlines so they make money to pay for the service.

you would not VPN into a network you dont trust. so you answered your own ponder, why would you connect to someone that pushes crap on you?

No way do I trust any open network... Whered ya get that?? :shock:

None of the afore mentioned wifi hotspots should be trusted This includes any open wifi!

By the way- WEP might as well be open. It can be hacked as fast as you can change the key.

I dont even really trust my VPN so have been looking around for a better solution.. :wink:

I see what you mean... None of these free hotspots use any encryption...

They're as wide open as a barn door! :twisted:

But referring to the tool Rich linked too- a properly set up WPA passphrase cant yet be hacked... Give it time I guess.

well thats not totally correct. it cant "not be hacked" its just difficult (it relies on bruit force) and its difficult today, rainbow tables for large math was "not possible years ago"

as for the open and no encryption, again the key is public so who cares if i have the key encrypted or not, i own you. so it could be a 100 charcter WPA2 password but taco bell publishes it for everyone so ...its open.

also chpalmer i wasnt saying you did it bad, just making the point for people reading along.

whats your current VPN that you dont trust, i can give you suggestions on how to improve

For Taco Bell, are you refering to the key they publish on the in store tv?

Thats a number you enter in a box on the first page that comes up when you start your browser... Its not any form of wep or wpa key. Their wifi is open.

They only use the number to try and keep non customers from browsing.




My VPN is into a Windows 2K box using Windows VPN server.
