This brings a question to mind.
With rebanding on the horizon, does this mean that Bonney Lake will purchase and install one system and then when rebanding comes along have to pay for modifying or replacing the system as well. Why not wait until rebanding is taken care of and then buy it?

Doesn't it typically take years to get licensed around here because of the border state issues? How the heck do they think they'll get sites licensed and up and running in six months? The same goes for Central Pierce Fire. They're supposed to switch to Tacoma FD for their dispatching as of 10/1/08 and at the same time switch to 800. I'll believe it when I hear it.

I don't listen to any Pierce Co stuff... does anyone share a radio system? In King Co everyone is on the same system. I see Tacoma has a few systems, but I doubt they'd piggyback on that. I guess I'm the only one that thought they might not be building their own system from scratch.

I don't buy the timeline either. I'd be stunned if they had the DESIGN phase done in six months, let alone licensing and equipment PO's.

Now, with that said... If BLPD does do this, it's going to prove very annoying to most of our south-end troopers who all have the BLPD VHF frequency in their radios.

It never all works out the same way --- but since the 800 & 700 Mhz frequencies are "assigned" to a County or local agency -- they are assigned to an "Area of operations". All of the 800 & 700 Mhz assignments have been "Accepted" by Canada, when the "State Plan" was proposed. Canada has already said it was OK to assign those 29 frequencies any where within Pierce County. Tacoma PD could just "File" to add a new site -- and as of the date that it was "Co-ordinated" with APCO, they could begin operation. Even without a new license being yet granted. They could be up and running -- yesterday -- if they wanted to. However, all of the upper 866 to 868 Mhz frequencies will have to be moved over to 851 - 853 Mhz area frequencies. It would be a simple task -- to "Flash" program the mobile/portable fleet -- but would take a day or two to re-program the repeater sites. There were 29 frequencies in the 800 mhz band assigned for Pierce County. Tacoma has most of the frequencies and has added a few more for the "Lakewood Site" and Puyallup has the remaining 5 channels. That's the entire system.

If Tacoma has most of the frequencies, and Puyallup has the remaining five, where does that leave Bonney Lake and the rest of Pierce County? It sounds like all that have been authorized have been taken. Will this require futher negotiations with our neighbors to the North?

1.) APCO is one of about 20 private professional associations that assist the FCC , on behalf of specific radio groups, to lobby and help obtain radio spectrum and licenses, on a fee basis. APCO, The Association of Public Safety Communications Officials, accepts as members, Radio Engineers, Dispatchers and persons that are all working for Public Safety radio users. ( 2.) As the newspaper reported, Bonney Lake will pay Puyallup to dispatch it's 911 calls. So Bonney Lake will use the Puyallup System. Most likely, other area cities will join the Puyallup PSAP. There are no other open 800 mhz channels. If, in the future, Pierce County or any other city in Pierce County -- deside to use 800 Mhz -- they will have to pay either the City of Tacoma or the City of Puyallup, to become a part of those systems -- or join both systems into one countywide system. Alot of small towns have been waiting to possibly use 700 mhz. But most where assigned to 'countywide' dispatch users, such as county transit systems or county PUD's. ( 3 ) Keep in mind at each system -- (Tacoma and Puyallup ) may not be 100% the same. It is not UN-common for Motorola to sell -- two different systems to radio users within the same area. Puyallup might not have all of the "Extra bells and whistles" that the Tacoma system might need or have. But then again, a fast talking salesman, might have sold Puyallup, EXTRAS that are not even a part of the Tacoma system. So both systems might NOT fit togather -- 100%. Look for different settings.
