If you go to the following website it still has a picture of engine which was at Station 91. You might be able to tell if it is the same one.

Station 33 is not an active response station at this time. It can however be manned on an as needed basis.

South King Station 65 at 4966 S. 298th St. is the station that covers the West Hill area.

Just a small point of clarification, but the existance of Station 34 (and the units housed there) is a result of annexation, not merger. VRFA is a result of the disolution of the Auburn City Fire Department and the City of Pacific Fire Department and the creation of the new fire authority.

I know many know this already, but just wanted clear it up for those that didn't.

In similar news regarding contracting, South King Fire and Fire District 2 (Burien/Normandy Park) renewed their contract for coverage on the North Des Moines area. The contract also stipulates that South King will serve the South Normandy Park area. This arrangement has been this way since Fire District 26 still existed and was continued after the merger between Federal Way and Dist. 26.

It has been said that the commissioners and administration of South King wanted to ultimately serve the area (North Des Moines) themselves, but could not even come close (using Station 26) to achieving the fast response times that Station 29 could yield. Station 29 is essentially located at 1st Ave. So. and Normandy Road, and has much faster on-scene times that units from elsewhere. In the last year, some of you may have heard Valleycom dispatching both a Station 29 and a Station 26 unit into the contract area for all calls. This is because the commissioners in South King insisted that one of their units be dispatched as well to ANY call in the contract area. So, you'll hear a double response in that area, and the instructions for the crews from both departments is to code-green the unit who doesn't get there first. In almost every instance, a Station 29 unit gets to that area between 2-3 minutes faster than a 26 unit, according to a firefighter from District 2.

The firefighters from District 2 are advocating a merger with South King, since relations between North Highline and Burien have cooled (between the commissioners and admin--not the FF's).

At any rate, that's the low-down with my local fire department.

Hopefully a bunch of these smaller fire departments will continue to merge and/or consoldate.

Good point. I did say merger when in fact it is the result of the recent annexation by the City of Auburn as you stated. Thank you.

Can you advise where the stations (and their numbers) are located for South King, North Highline and the Normandy Park? From what you were saying, I presume that Fire District 2 covers the Normandy Park area. Is that correct?

Also, did the City of Algona ever have their own fire dept?

Many thanks.

No Algona has never had a fire department nor a fire station within the city limits. All Service has always been provided by Auburn and now VRFA.

I know VRFA has contracted with South King to cover the annexed West Hill area. Do you know which station in Federal Way is primary in that area and the stations location? Also, any idea what VRFA's long term plans are for coverage on the West Hill?

Station 65. It's only a few feet outside Auburn city limits but ironically has had an Auburn mailing address since forever. It's in the area that Federal Way wanted to annex but but got voted down. I don't have any information from either department, but I highly doubt the contract is going to end any time soon. Station 31 is the closest VRFA station to West Hill. Going code yellow, it's a 10-15 minute drive (I used to work a block away from 31 and I live on West Hill). Also, the only direct way to access the area is by taking 37th ST NW up "the windey hill" as us local yokels call it. (That's wine-DEE, because when I spelled it windy it would've been the hill of lots of moving air). As I see it, West Hill is going to continue to be served by station 65 AKA "The Retirement Station" for a long time to come.

I was in downtown Auburn earlier this week and noticed two fire engines parked on Main Street. They were sitting in front of one of the closed taverns across from City Hall. One was the "Telesquirt" and designated as "32." The other was the Mack fire engine, which I believe is the smallest actual fire apparatus that VRFA has. The Mack was designated as "33" and had the VRFA shield/logo on it.

I don't know if Engine 33 is now in service or where it would be based. I haven't heard it dispatched on any calls. Curious ???????
