Correct, and it'll be happening Sunday too. We had a number of missions along the I-90 corridor as well, after first getting called up and then cancelled for a response to the slide. Busy day.

KOMO has updated news at noon that up to 30 homes were destroyed and 18 people are still missing.
Looked at the area on Google Maps and there are a lot of houses in the area the slide covered. Don't know where they got the 6 houses from they said were demolished yesterday.

The incident site is having issues with itinerant aircraft flying in the area even though there is an FAA NOTAM published that prohibits air traffic within 5 miles of the incident up to 5000'. I suspect that if law enforcement manages to get a tail number on any of those aircraft, then that pilot is going to lose his/her license and probably face a stiff fine as well. Pilots are supposed to check NOTAM's before flying. Snohawk 10 reported that one of the planes flew within 300 feet of the helicopter about 1340 hours.

That's the previous slide that occured the last week of January 2006 that also blocked the river and wiped out part of Steelhead Drive.

Continuing to hear of occasional restricted air space violations in the slide area. Approximately 1630 this afternoon, "High Bird" reported a yellow bi-plane was spotted in the valley which came close to a photo reconnaissance plane which was making photo runs for geological purposes. High Bird tried to establish radio comms with the bi-plane without success to warn the offender of a "TFR violation".

High Bird is an air-cap fixed wing airplane that provides oversight of the area during day light hours to protect the helicopters and other authorized fixed wing aircraft flying below and generally seems to operate about 4000 ft or so. The High Bird duty is shared by what I believe might be a CAP plane and occasionally an WSP fixed wing aircraft (Smokey 4).

There seems to be a need to occasionally transport essential personnel from Arlington to Darrington and back and I have heard Snohawk 1 (the small Snohomish County chopper) and two WSP planes providing this transport. On Monday evening for example, Snohawk-1 transported the Incident Commander (IC) to a community meeting in Darrington and then returned after sunset with the IC to Arlington. Probably a bit more tricky flying in that area in the darkness.

Snohawk-10, the larger Snohomish chopper is being used for hoisting of recovered bodies. Last night, they had to abandon picking up one of three bodies when they ran out of daylight. Since the weather is going to turn bad starting Tuesday with rain predicted for the next seven days, the helicopter flying is going to become very challenging and risky, if even possible considering that the valley will likely become very foggy as well. I would imagine that High Bird will not be able to operate at all during this extended weather period.
