The City of Seattle’s Department of Information Technology (DoIT) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Senior Communications Technician in the Communications Technologies Division. The Department of Information Technology provides technology leadership for the City enterprise, developing common standards, architectures, and business solutions to deliver City services more efficiently and effectively. DoIT is responsible for Citywide technology governance, strategic planning and policy development, and programs that promote technology literacy and public access to government information. The department manages the City’s technology infrastructure which includes the City’s data center, communications networks, and end user support and customer services activities.
Job Responsibilities:
Lead and perform installation, testing, maintenance and repair of commercial FM two-way radio systems and equipment including Motorola SmartZone 800-Mhz trunked simulcast radio network, microprocessor-controlled radio transceivers, simulcast site controllers, antenna systems, multi-site microwave links, dispatch consoles, and associated telecommunications and network equipment which impact government and public safety operations for external and internal customers. This senior position requires a firm understanding of IP networks and interconnecting devices; experience with Ethernet backhaul as it applies to Land Mobile Radio networks including MPLS; and an advanced knowledge of basic electronics theory, circuit design, the use of hand and power tools used in electronics, the operation of electronic test and diagnostic equipment. This employee will coordinate the work of personnel performing less complex installation, maintenance and repair of land and mobile-based communications equipment, and perform the more involved or technically complex facility systems installations and maintenance. Act as lead in major installation and upgrade projects. Communicate effectively concerning technical installation matters. Perform related telecommunication duties commensurate with classification level.
Qualifications:
Equivalent of an AA degree in Electronics, including specific coursework involving communications equipment, digital circuitry, and/or test equipment usage; and four years experience in installation, maintenance and repair of commercial FM 2-way radio communications and related electronic equipment and systems. Specialized knowledge of basic electronics theory, circuit design, antenna systems, and FCC Rules and Regulations is required for installation, operation, maintenance and repair of various communications and electronic equipment. Minimum one year hands-on experience with Motorola SmartZone version 4.1 and Motorola ASTRO version 7.X system infrastructure. Proven supervisory or lead experience with ability to implement personnel practices/procedures. Ability to exercise considerable independent judgment in diagnosing and resolving complex or non-routine technical problems. Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to communicate at technical, inter-team and customer levels; excellent customer service skills. Working knowledge of Windows applications, electronic messaging, and various Motorola 4.1 and 7.x and industry-standard software. Participation in 24/7 on-call rotation for emergency repairs.
