Do they really need a completely new building for their PSAP???

Considerable expense has been made over the last decade or so upgrading the "old" VHF/UHF systems in Pierce County... far beyond mere "maintenance"... Some of this work I was personally involved with...

A half-billion dollars 25 years ago bought Seattle a pretty big rathole under downtown complete with 2 miles of radiax and two complete repeater sites full of police/fire/transit radios... not to mention the SCADA network and all the CCTV...

All Pierce County really needs to do is replace the radios with something the FCC can live with as far as bandwidth is concerned...
That ought to hold them over until the economy recovers and then they can build their gold-plated dispatch center!!!

Backups are generally used for many other situations besides area disasters. If the entire county goes down then your people will probably go to a neighboring county or city dispatch, or the state EOC for support. Once you need dispatch from another agency then other factors come into play such as how to page out your fire departments, keep track of your resources, ect...

The biggest beneficiaries of this ballot measure are Tacoma's Firefighters. They'll take over dispatch for all of the county and be paid much higher than their police counterparts. All the while we'll continue to have to deal with call transfers, slowing down dispatches. The stupid part of this whole deal is that the people involved didn't lay the political groundwork to make this actually work. Puyallup and Fife are both pissed off and don't support it.

If they were going to merge police and fire and do cross trained dispatchers a la just about everywhere else in the region, this would be worth supporting. But as it is now, it's a total waste of money for no real benefit.

Separate dispatchers? What is this? 1985?

Seattle still does this, and it works very well.

As for Tacoma Fire Fighters "being paid more", I did not see that in the "plan" to spend all this money.

For my $.02 worth, I like having TFD do their dispatching. The few times I've had to call them for something (2 emergency, one service), they've been top notch. On the service call, Puyallup's dispatcher, before she transferred me, had no idea what I was talking about. Once I got through to TFD, they knew exactly what I needed, who could help me, where the equipment I needed was, and sent someone out.

No. No, it doesn't work very well. I call Seattle's 911 service all the time, mostly for requesting ALS responses. I know that I get a SPD call taker first, and just ask to be transferred to SFD dispatch. Most people aren't aware of this, and end up having to repeat themselves a couple of times, once for the SPD call taker, once for the SFD one once they get transferred. Then, for things like assaults with injuries or MVCs that get both fire and police responding, you end up in a conference call with 2 call takers and a radio dispatcher or two... a single point of contact works much, much, better.

Portland I know no matter what call taker I get, they get the ball going. At work, I'm either requesting a police response or ALS response from AMR and/or PFR and they sort it out. Once in a full moon because of a goofy situation, they might transfer me to the AMR desk directly for further clarification, but thats after they put them on the line to listen.

It could be even easier than that... They could request a waiver from the FCC to maintain operation of their wide band equipment, citing economic hardship among their tax base as justification. So like KB7DQH said... "That ought to hold them over until the economy recovers and then they can build their gold-plated dispatch center!!!"
