I thought about the advantage of downloading Microsoft's own virus scanner and I quickly realized, "Isn't it because of Microsoft that we have to have these anti-virus programs? Shouldn't they just fix their operating system?"
as taco said, windows software is actually awesome if it wasn't for Microsoft we likely wouldn't be where we are. Meaning with out them we wouldn't have viruses because it would be arguable that we wouldn't be in the state we are in of technology today.
Linux is just as vulnerable and more so (OSX in that as well), its just not used as much, patched faster because of the nature of the open code, and there isn't that big of a pay off to attack it since "everyone uses windows"
over the years NT, XP, 2003, 2008, Win7 are some of the best operating system code that you can want to have. NT was secure as hell, people are just lazy and didnt secure it. XP was very secure-able but the world saw a HUGE leap in mal-x code in that time, 2003 addressed a lot of the issues. 2008 and 7 are the "new age" of idiot proof software and mal-x protection.
you cant assume that m$ can battle the whole world when it comes to crappy developers and drivers and code. 80% of the time the issue wasnt M$ fault remember that the core of windows is the HAL and if you write a shitty driver and it crashes you cant blame M$ for the crash on windows when the vendor not testing the code.
if you install only Microsoft code and drivers your system will run a lot faster a lot longer and a lot more stable (for example I only run windows and office on the physical operating system, everything else is in a virtual kernel or environment EVERYTHING! even this firefox browser) I never have a crash I leave the computer on for months or quarters with out a reboot. (normally patching on the quarter) and I have the speed and performance I demand of a PC also I only need to rebuild the computer once every 3-5 years and not the every 1 year trick.
anywhoo </rant>
