What's it used for? It's been around since at least 2006 but I don't see it as ever being dispatched. Seen in this gallery below that awesome photo of Medic 80.

Looks like a very large smoke evacuator. it says something under Seattle FD but cant read it

It's Mobile Ventilation Unit One, a very large blower.

SFD uses it to make money. They clean up shopping malls at night blowing out the parking lots. Wooooosh !

Looks like they just park it out front of the hall and turn it on to eliminate sweeping the floor :D

Per the book, Seattle Fire Department by Richard Schneider, it is for removing smoke from subways and tunnels. It looks like it was purchased by Sound Transit.

Bus tunnel has its own internal fire ventilation system, I been there when it was tested before they opened it. No soft-start on those motors, I can tell you that!

I suppose this vehicle could be used if the whole blasted city lost power and they needed to blow down the tunnel after a fire? Would work nicely for the
BNSF tunnel, battery street, etc...

That is how the people at DARPA think. they take things and use them in unconventional ways, to see what happens.

So I took a peek at that book; it's a lot of historical stuff, a full photo gallery of all the chiefs, and only a few pages of the current fleet. All photos are black and white, which was disappointing for the newer stuff. Captions are on average only 3 sentences.


So here's another one:



Is this SAFT-2? It left about a minute after SAFT-2 and Battalion 2 got code green'ed, and I saw B2 at another location. The only other command vehicle I didn't see on scene was DEP1 and STAF10.

I believe the vehicle in the picture is Deputy 1. Safety 2 is a similar vehicle that is simply marked "SAFETY." Staff 10 is also similar. It is marked "STAFF 10."
