Okay so went and got my mothers scanner (she got it about 1.5 year ago) that she no longer uses. Now I am trying to program it, I would like to start by just getting some of the local fire/police. Do any of you have a list of Thurston/Pierce county freq. that you may share with me?

Here is a list for Pierce county:

I have a new Uniden BCT15X and it runs circles around my old RS 2042. I'd say get a good outside antenna and put it up at least 30 ft. on your roof. I hear every thing from Tacoma-Bellingham living out near Monroe, 30 miles NE of Seattle. I'm on a hill. (600 ft) but don't have a direct line of sight to anything south.

I put an AntennaCraft ST2( $27)wide band base antenna about 2 weeks ago up about 30 ft. on my tower and it hears 100% better than the Radio Shack discone I've had up there. Put your money into the best antenna you can find. That will get you the most bang for your buck. Higher the better is always my motto!....:)

I'll second the AntennaCraft ST2. Its a good antenna for the price.
