I've been listening to an open mic? or maybe a baby monitor for the last week on 49.8500. I see it's listed as Military are there baby monitors on this freq. too? I can hear several clocks dinging on the hour as well as a tv going right now. People coughing, talking, etc etc. Wondering if they know they are transmitting?

I'm 7 miles N. of Monroe, and the nearest military would be in Evt I believe. The signal is full scale on my BCT15X.

Back in the day i used to listen to freq's in that area that were baby monitors, and old cordless phones were near that range too I believe. Used to listen to the neighbors arguments through the baby monitor lol.

Yeah, was thinking a baby monitor, but seeing how strong the signal is can't figure out who it could be. I'm way back in the woods with my nearest neighbor over 300 ft. away. Sounds like a business with a security guard. They do watch a lot of tv and I can hear someone sweeping. Not family type sounds. They have 2 clocks dinging 2 am!......:)

Grab a handheld and chase down the source.

If the source is behind a barb wire fence I would recommend discretion be used. :wink:

Nothing is listed in WA FCC database
or in BC Canada on this freq.

Someone maybe using the old portables that operated on the above freqs.

I still have a few of these and they had a pretty fair range.

But from the description of the transmissions it sure sounds like baby monitor.

I can remember hearing some of these with a range of 4 blocks. Some seemed to be putting out a lot more power than others.

Those are the standard FCC freqs for toy walkie-talkies and baby monitors.

They're limited in power but some are powered by AC adapter. And if it's an upstairs room on a hilltop somewhere... it can go for miles! :)

And yes the good'ole days of cordless phone monitoring was serious fun... at least around here. Everything from drug dealing to... well, use your imagination. :D

It's probably a baby monitor on 49.845 MHz.

So are cordless phones a pain to listen to now? Do they rotate freq's nowadays? Anyone still monitor cordless phones?

I have a Pro 2042 that's tunable and there's no signal on 49.845 It's on 49.8500 I did a Google search for baby monitors and doesn't show anything on 49.85?

Yes, I can remember the cordless phone days. I would think there's still some around, but haven't heard much in years. Not that I've listened!.....:) Found out I had a neighbor running a Meth lab. Another neighbor about to get a divorce. Actually several neighbors about to get a divorce that they didn't know about!.......

Last resort you might try monitoring the audio and have someone go outside and
make a loud sound in a few locations in your vicinity and see if you can hear them on your scanner. I know that sounds weird but that is exactly what I used to help the local Coast Guard find a fishing boat with a stuck mic which was transmitting on 156.800. I had them drive around the water front and honk their horn while I listened. When they got to where I could hear the horn I went to that location and used a paperclip for an antenna. We finally found the right boat by tapping on the windows of a few boats where the sound was loud. The boat had come down all the way from Alaska with it stuck on. They had had the radio repaired in Alaska and someone didn't do too good of a job. I wrote a story about this and it was in U.S. Scanner News quite a few years back. :D

your kidding I have the SAME signal in renton/fairwood.

you have people talking but you cant understand them, and it don't sound like TV intermod right? I ran across this about a week ago and ignored this thread till just now. I had written down on my notepad "what the hell is 49.88 (I was in SSB)" then just looked at this thread.

I did plug into my spectrum analyzer and it was a perfect signal had two harmonics, with +20

totally hunting this down when I get home this evening. I am gonna put a recorder on it if its still there

this signal is also +10 in snoqualmie I cant find a voice like I do in renton but there is a solid +10 carrier and some digital noise, in renton I have digital noise on the subcarrier of the FM I just find it odd that we all have the same baby monitor problem... unless I missed out on how popular baby monitors of fixed carrier were. I thought after the 80/90 they are all spread spectrum now. ahh I remember the days of listening to neighbors argue :)
