At about 10 AM Sunday morning - a private plane with 2 persons on board struck the 750 foot tall KFI Main Antenna Tower. Both persons were killed and the tower came down. KFI is back on the air using a much shorter 'auxilary' 200 foot tall tower, but may go off the air for tests at 12 AM this evening. The KFI tower was built in 1948 when it was moved from downtown Los Angeles to the present location in La Mirada, just north of Interstate 5 very near the Los Angeles County / Orange County line. The 750 foot tower its about a half wave antenna. Lots of pictures and data on the web. May be some good DXing of the lower AM band. KFI is on 640 khz - with 50 KW - Non-directional. 640 Khz is the first of 25 - 1A Clear Channels.
