Tonight at 11pm, KING TV will air a report about Washington Department of Corrections wanting to use cell phone jammers in it's facilities.

Are these devices even legal?

Is it a jammer or detector? Subtle yet significant difference.

There goes the side income for the c.o.'s; no more selling $10 Tracphones for $100 to the 'residents'....

It may not work anyway. Lots of State Prisons have moved over to the 800 Mhz band -- like the State of California. Some 30 prisons -- all using a "mini trunked" 800 mhz system. Cellphones are all above 869 Mhz. However -- Nextel -- which does provided telephone interconnect services operate within the standard 800 mhz public safety band (851 to 869Mhz). It might be very good for Nextel business. It also will be difficult to "limit" any jamming to above 869 mhz -- and NOT cause some sort of interference to the local Prison radio system -- if they operate within the 800 mhz public safety band.

The jammers scare the hell out of me. We've had very bad experiences with them.

Back in 2000, I put up some freq's for WSR & the others on the 'Hill'.

'Cell Jammers' would compromise the target (Inmates w/ contraband phones) plus operational comms, & mutual/ incoming aid to the institution.

Regarding contraband, I have seen a guy(s) report for duty wearing blue, only to leave wearing orange. .

They just need to build prisons more like schools. I can't remember the last time I had decent reception inside a school building.

Sitting here with my wife, we agree that hospitals (where I work) and Costco's (where she spends it) both have terrible reception.

So imagine this, rather than blowing all this money on prisons, lets house them in Costco's, Schools, and Hospitals.

Who knows, we may even turn out some ex-cons who are well educated, very healthy, and know how to save money!

I have a dude in a jumpsuit and 1,000 of his friends plus a camera crew follow me around everywhere. If I have bad reception, they form a parabolic dish and suddenly my phone works again.
