I am looking for assistance in programming an MTS2000 to monitor only on the Clark County TRS. Does anyone know if the radio shop for the county will program a radio like King County does?
I don't want to do anything illegal but I would love to hear their system better than my scanner.

King County does not, and Clark probably won't either.

King County did, I have an Astro Saber that was programmed by them. I got it from my friend who was stationed at Fort Lewis, he left to me when he went to Fort Bragg.
I am sure that in the post 9/11 world that they don't do it anymore.
Is there a legal way to do this? I don't want to brake any laws and I especially don't want to interupt communications but there must be a way to do this.
I have a limited amount of knowledge when it comes to trunking, but I joined this forum to learn more. Would someone help me with this?

I don't know of any county that will do this for you nor who did it for anyone. Your best bet if you want to listen to trunking systems, is to stick with you scanner and dump your MTS 2000.
Are you sure that your Astro Saber is on the King County TRS system and not the old UHF? If so, not sure how he got it programmed on the TRS legally.

As mentioned the world isn't friendly anymore we consider everyone as a terrorist (not to mention the fact that I don't consider it appropriate or acceptable to have a radio that can TX on the system). Your likely to get a lot further mileage just to buy a GRE/Uniden Trunker.

The fact that radios are in the public domain that can do this is why we are looking at one day no longer having the ability to listen to the system; with a switch to a IP or Encrypted new age system to prevent the use of unauthorized radios on a public service network.

change the thread to ask "can someone wipe this radio so I can sell it on ebay and buy a Uniden/GRE"

This is not a new topic to this forum! if you look hard enough you can read about how the City of Seattle Radio Shop "Back in the Day" would program a non transmit radio for the citizen. This is when Seattle first went to the 800 Mhz TRS.

Now as of today they probably don't do it. But people should not pipe in on this site and say it was never done! In fact it was offered on there web site!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I run all commercial radios pretty much anymore. It would be neat to carry a 800 brick around or a mobile but if you had to upgrade talk groups, or freqs, the coolness factor would be lost if one didn't have the access to programming. I think the newer scanners are pretty good at sensitivity and the programming can be customized for trunking tables and the like.

Moving on... If you opt for this, your paying for convenience; to have someone do the grunt work for you so that you can listen to the system, it just happens to be a commercial radio it's coming on. Assuming you have the knowledge to understand the SmartZone basic theory of operation you can be more effective with a new scanner (same or cheaper than the XTS they're gonna make you buy) and be able to adapt much more quickly to changes.

Out of the box the scanner's have weaknesses such as their teeny speakers and antennas. You can improve on those with third party products though.

I'm gonna pick on Icom1020 to make an example...

Is it worth the couple hundred + equipment costs?

The policy for public access is probably more intended for media then the average scanner-joe.

CRESA would not do it for you either.

The MTS2000 can be put on the system, but my suggestion is to get a GTX portable since they can work the system passively. But you are limited to 10 talkgroups.

I would agree with the OP, there was a time when the gubment was happy to do so for media and others when cooler times prevailed. I carry a VHF MTS portable because in track speeder operations, any modified radio that some in our group carry near paging or other sources of rf, sounds like crap and I can drop it or throw it at someone or something and it will usually still work. I would be concerned over whether a used $200 800mhz radio could be programmed. The cost is the easy part.

ha, media is 2x as evil as the Joe, they act like they are professionals ...don't get me started on media using radios... all to sell a 30 second advert space, NOT provide anyone any help.

Feel lucky you guys can still listen to your police departments down in your neck of the woods.. on any type of radio/monitor.
As fast as you can say "encryption" another one or two local police departments changes to that mode up here in BC.
in no time flate the only police depts we will be monitoring will be stuff in washington state or nothing at all.
when that happens, look for some great scanner/ham or commercial transceiver deals on ebay from BC :lol:
