A sign that your GRE is waaaaaaay more powerful than anything you've ever programmed...lol

Are you plugging it directly into the laptop? You shouldn't see this if you are. Try unplugging other USB stuff.

To find the right COM port, right click on My Computer, select Manage (pronounced mah-NAW-juz) then click Device Manager. You will probably have an entry labeled "Ports (LPT and COM)". Expand that, and there will probably be only one thing listed, and its number will be right there.

Bonus: if you're using a legacy program that only supports COM 1-4 and it's currently assigned to 5 or higher, right click, select properties. On the Port settings tab, click Advanced, and at the bottom you can change the port number.

I find the 800 section weak. I get almost full coverage on the 780 with outside antenna and fair coverage on my 396. Nothing on the 500. I had to drag out my 806-866 motorola yagi to finally get Seattle trunk from home.

I don't know how to say this because no one will believe me. The antenna that works the best is a radioshack extendable with the black plastic mid-load. Yes better than the yagi.

One thing to check and I don't know this is, but the radio defaults to having Global Attenuation on (the G icon) If its on, press FUNC and ATT to disable it.

Still a bit weak. Looks like I will buy an 800 specific HT antenna. I'm also getting a weird hum at times on all the radios. Never heard before. I am about 44 miles to Columbia Center.

Have you tried the $20 Radio Shack 800 antenna? It's the only good thing they sell, and it's a damn good antenna for 800.

Yeah, I have never had any problems in Seattle using the RS 800 MHz antenna over the stock one.
