I have tried one of those USB to serial port converters; didn't work. The PC recognized it but the scanner didn't. Can some one point me in the direction of what will work with Uniden? I see adapter cards, but for one instance of use I wonder if $40 isn't a little steep and it may not work. Any suggestions?

I bought this one. $2.95 shipped. I actually paid a little bit more than that--they've since lowered their prices. Dunno if the quality has changed, but mine works fine with a 396.

That looks like the one I've got, doesn't work for me though.

Thanks for the suggestion.

You've got the right COM port selected? The scanner probably won't "recognize" the USB part.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I finally found a serial card on Newegg that was cheap enough to risk chancing it's not working. Since it appears Uniden won't recognize USB.

You keep mentioning that it won't "recognize USB". Neither the software or the scanner will recognize the programming cable automatically. You need to set the COM port in the software manually to whatever the USB adaptor is using as it's COM port. You are dealing with a serial port in the programming software, and the USB device is adapting the serial port to a USB connection.

I've used dozens of different USB to serial adaptors with both the Uniden and GRE / Radio Shack radios and they have all worked fine for me. But none of them worked without some manual settings being made in the software...
