I believe that the SUV stands for "Sobering Unit Van". There are at least two of these vans and they are used to pick-up intoxicated people from the streets and take them to a detox center. The vans are staffed by social worker types. They are usually dispatched on the SPD East talkgroup even though they provide services in other parts of the city including downtown. They have been around for years, but there is probably an increased amount of activity due to the weather - they want to be sure that intoxicated people don't freeze in the cold.

Back in the `70's and `80's the detox van used the radio designator of Lincoln One.

I was trying to remember what they called it.
Memory has gone foggy.
All I could remember is in PDX it is called CAHOOTS
(Or is that EUG, there goes the fog again...)

Portland is CHIERS or CHEIRS? CHEERS? good one huh?

Hooper’s CHIERS* roving response van assesses and transports alcoholics and addicts from streets and hospital emergency rooms throughout the city. The emergency medical technician on board the CHIERS van is well equipped to work with street alcoholics, substance abusers and the mentally ill, thus providing significant assistance to Portland Police. Under Oregon’s civil hold rules, CHIERS staff is deputized to deliver these people to care.

It has been a long time since I have thought about the Hooper Hilton near the old Central Precinct in PDX. I also was trying to think of the old Lincoln Wagon. Glad someone remembered. Fortunately I was never a guest at either one.

Isn't CHEIRS just a E-350?

I haven't seen it lately. It's usually some sort of van. I remember it from the 80s. It was a white Chevy van with the Mars lights left over from PPB that were all red. They were on Central Precinct back then too.
