Just noticed today that at the beginning of the newscast of KIRO 7 they have a big High Definition sign flash. Are they broadcasting in HD like KING 5? If so when did they switch? It looks pretty good. :D Thanks -Louie-

We sure are- New set/new HD cameras/ new HD infrastructure / new HD graphics/new HD Weather and Traffic equipment. The transition went smoother than most SD to HD transitions. Some sources aren't HD just yet: DOT cams (obvously), Live shots (waiting for 2ghz BAS relocation by Nextel), Citycam.

KOMO doesn't broadcast their news in HD- they're widescreen SD.

Is Chopper 7 going to get an HD camera upgrade?

It has one already- the transmitter isn't HD just yet. We've got 10 live trucks/Chopper 7 to switch over so it will take a while. When we get our COFDM microwave gear it will be HD. As it stands, Chopper (as well as all live shots) are sent in 16x9 anamorphic (squished) Analog SD. Back at the station the signals are upconverted to 1080i HD. Legacy viewers (4x3) get a center cut of the picture- HD viewers get the full picture such as Anchor's hands or coffee cups on the side

The problem we (as well as KOMO and KING) run into is analog anamorphic looks bad if the signal isn't 100% The noise gets magnified horizontally.

Chopper 7 Pics from SeaFair- on the nose is a FLIR Gyrostabilized camera mound with a Sony HD Block Camera looking through a Sweet HD lens. The microwave antennas are inside the clear Radome under the belly. They auto-track all of our different microwave receive sites.

Those last two pics of the chopper blend in really well; it almost looks like Chopper 7 is going to land on Chopper 7.

Thanks Mike! Cool pics and inside info.I think it's really interesting to listen in on the common helicopter frequency when chopper 7 and the other news helicopters are on scene covering something. Some cool chit-chat between pilots can be heard. 122.7750.
