So my new scanner allows you to program trunk systems with just the control channels or control channels with the rest of the voice channels. Is there one advange over another?

p.s. Had a chance to do some scanning in Las Vegas for Red Flag. Pretty cool and if you guys go down there when Red Flag is running bring your scanner!!

OK you can only do that on Motorola 800 meg systems

You can set it up for control channel only but the biggest promblem is when they change the control channel then you well have to reprogram it fo rthe new control channel If you put in all of the freqs for the trunk system, then you don't have to worry about it

If you do control channel only, and the admin adds a channel to the system, you won't miss anything.

Yes I need to get info staright on this as well. So if I were to enter the CC for the king co system and then in another bank enter the CC's for the Valley comms system, then all the CC's in a 3rd bank for snohomish co. etc and so on. Then i would not have to enter all the freqs in each system. This to me makes more sense to me, as each ssytem has tons of freqs for different sites. Now do i need to enter only the closest site to me? or all the sites for a system?

Older Trunk Trackers will require everything. Newer ones will only require control channels and, with mine anyway, I can put multiple control channels for the same system in one bank. If the control channel changes then the scanner will scan through all the control channels until it finds an active one. Make sure you only put same system control channels in any one bank and only put talk groups for the same system as the contral channels in that bank.

Yes, that's what I do, just input all the control channels in order of preference of the ones you like to listen to.

For example, in one bank I have Seattle Simoul, EPSCA Simoul, King County Simoul, EPSCA North, Apple Cove, KC - Courthouse, Ed Hill (temp freq), KC- McDonald mtn, KC-Grass mtn, KC-Dodge Ridge, KC-Sobieski. I think that's the whole system, 11 control channel freqs.

Pretty much in that order. I lock out all the channels except the one I want to listen too on that particular day. Keep in mind each of the above sites gives you totally different radio traffic. The ones you want to listen too are usually one of the three big ones - Seattle, EPSCA or KC Simoulcast. The smaller sites don't have a lot of traffic but can be useful for specific incidents in specific areas. If your scanner locks onto Apple Cove, for instance, you won't hear much except KC Sheriff around Shoreline. Or Ed hill = only Redmond Police and that's it, etc..
But you do want them all in the same bank so you can program alpha tags for the talkgroup ID's, otherwise you'll have a tough time figuring out what you're listening too!
