Caught this exchange a couple of days ago in Kitsap Co.
Dispatch: "Here's the data on your request"
Patrol: "Can you please repeat? You were scratchy. Oh, never mind. I'll call you on my cell, it works better."

Well, they will be up a creek when Nexthell pulls the plug :shock:

As that is the carrier Kitsap County deputies and detectives use.....

Of course the Nexthell coverage is only worth a darn in the populated areas, the rest of the county is "dark"...

That is how the people at DARPA think. they take things and use them in unconventional ways, to see what happens.

kc6 -- this is nothing new. I remember hearing this all the time on KCPD when I monitored it heavily back in the late 80s/early 90s. As soon as cell phones became "affordable" they were immediately used by PDs all over country.

I'm pretty sure back then, KCPD had "pool" phones -- as the same unit would have a different number each night.

Cell phones won't replace radio. Too many hands in the cookie jar.

My question is what is going to happen in the next year when Nextel will be no more.

I know some agencies down here in Oregon are switching to regular Verizon cell phones and just saying bye-bye to DirectConnect...

But Verizon has that unit-to-unit feature. Can't remember what it was called or why they were charging extra for a more efficient use of their spectrum.

Have you tried using it? Its like more like "Push to Wait". The delay is really really bad if you are not on the same tower.

I've never had a phone that supports it, or a motive to buy one to pay for the feature.

Although in its defense, don't they allow unlimited unit-to-unit talking? And to beat it down again, Verizon also allows unlimited unit-to-unit full duplex calls...
