Possibly. Even though the exact amount wasn't stated, it should have been obvious that it was more than $5 since it said "plus standard licensing fees." There is a place on the DOL web site under "Contact Us" that lists a number for Vehicle and boat registration customer service. You could have called to get more information before mailing. Call them tomorrow at (360) 902-3770 and ask if you should send another check or wait for the mail to be returned for insufficient funds.

Interesting topic. kb7ado, I appreciate your information. My only concern is that just before this topic started I called a DOL "help desk" number listed on the website. I asked the same question about getting a HAM plate. I was quoted $5.00. The only thing the person seemed to be unsure about was whether a replacement plate fee would have to be paid. I worked in a call center for a major airline for many years so I know how mis-information can happen. My only suggestion would be to make sure everyone is on the same page so there is consistency. By the way, the person who helped me seemed to be very courteous and professional.

Actually, checks are separated from correspondence in the mail room and sent to a different department. They're required to be deposited within 24 hours after being received, even if the right amount isn't submitted. You may still end up getting a shortage letter. If it ends up not being processed, a refund check is sent.

Here's a bit more random paranoia about ham plates in WA...

Washington Revised Code RCW 46.16.340: Amateur radio operator plates — Information furnished to various agencies.

The director, from time to time, shall furnish the state military department, the department of community, trade, and economic development, the Washington state patrol, and all county sheriffs a list of the names, addresses, and license plate or radio station call letters of each person possessing the special amateur radio station license plates so that the facilities of such radio stations may be utilized to the fullest extent in the work of these governmental agencies.

[1995 c 391 § 8; 1986 c 266 § 49; 1985 c 7 § 112; 1974 ex.s. c 171 § 43; 1967 c 32 § 23; 1961 c 12 § 46.16.340. Prior: 1957 c 145 § 3.]

Well, that requirement doesn't surprise me looking at the history of how ham plates came around in most states and provinces.

got a letter today for incorrect funds, so the total is 12.75 and you get your plate... (as mentioned in prior posts)

I met an older gentleman with 'WSP' as the last 3 of his call. I can't remember the first part, other then the 7.
