I had to mail an application and a copy of my ham license. The local offices couldn't do it. http://www.dol.wa.gov/vehicleregistration/spham.html has all the info. It's $5 I think.

If you sell your vehicle you can transfer your ham call plate to your new vehicle.

The license plates have to be replaced every 10 years in Washington anyway so you get a new one and can use your old one as a decoration in your shack :D

1- Stalking or not, I'm not giving out my home address to anyone in traffic who wants it. There are enough ways to get that without freely advertising it.

2- I've had many cars, and had many of them broken into. But I'm not going to advertise more reasons to enter my car to Joe Shit the Car Prowler.

I'm not talking about living in fear, but rather "hardening the target".

sure but you can do that and have everything else as well. you dont need your FCC ticket back to your home address, I wouldn't recommend it if I just Google your name I will eventually come across one of the multiple (including this site) that keep records of the FCC database with address and location. by FCC you just need an address where you can get mail. so work, PO box, etc etc etc.

you can have radios in your car... just don't leave faceplate on them or have them in view. ever since I had a nice theft I went stealth my radios all come out and I put a black block in the place of the wires so even with a 30 second look at the dash you have no idea it looks like the factory stereo has been broken is all. a little work on the install job and your theft free.

I havent ever heard of bad guys targeting ham radio operator plates. they need things that sell like ipods and blue tooth, only nerds buy ham radio and they want shit that "works on all bands with no tuner" so a scratched up stolen radio is only good to the crooked ham in the first place, or the CB operator... haha

Yes, worked like a charm. New plates came in the u.s. mail.

And yes, I worry slightly about the fact that it's got my home address on it but then again if they want that info badly they just pay a little money to someone on any license plate.

As to theft.... well, that's what the other optional equipment is for that requires an entirely different permit :D

I have auto insurance, if they steal things, that's why I pay for insurance. I don't keep anything that cant be replaced in my cars... been there had the window glass or missing car. whine about it punch a wall and move on :)

You might want to double check that with your Insurance carrier! Been there, done that! Had my car broken into just over a year ago and they stole my laptop, BCT15, Pro 97 and a few other things. The speculation is they used Shaved keys to go thru the passenger side door to get into the vehicle as the windows were all in tact and I know the vehicle was locked. I filed a police report and called the insurance company and was told that since the items were loose in the vehicle and not permanently mounted (the scanners were stashed under the seat and laptop was in back behind deep tinted windows and under a cover in the back of an SUV)...and the interior of the vehicle was not destroyed, they were not covered and I was out of luck. It falls under 'homeowners insurance' so you might want to make sure you are covered under that or make sure everything is bolted down solid and if someone does break into your vehicle, they have to tear it apart to get it out and destroy the interior while doing so (picture hole where stereo used to be, dash ripped up and wires hanging out)

As for your plates... I think the sub-agent is thinking along the lines of a Vanity/Personalized plate with something on it like "Q Ball" or anything along that line which do cost more. You might be better off just going directly to the DOL.

The initial cost for ham plates is $12.75. Most of that fee is for the new plates. They cannot be processed at a subagent or at the county auditor's office. You need to download the Special Plate application (420449.pdf) from the DOL web site, follow the directions, and mail it to Olympia. Even though the form says to "Take to any vehicle licensing office", all they can do with it is mail it in with their daily paperwork, so you will save time by mailing it yourself. Make sure your registration is not due to be renewed within 6 weeks of your application, or they will hold up processing until they see it has been renewed. Ham plates take the same amount of time as personalized plates because they have to be ordered special from Walla Walla (6-8 weeks), although you will receive the new tabs and registration separately and sooner because they come from Olympia. Your registration date will not change because you got ham plates. Most plate series in Washington currently have a 7 year mandatory replacement cycle (Combination, Exempt, and some others do not). There is no extra fee when renewing. Yes, I work for DOL in Olympia in Vehicle Services.

This is more of a curiousity question, but.... Don't they send you a paper temporary with your Call printed on it till the plates themselves arrive? Seems I've seen those in the back window of vehicles.

Frequently, but not always, a cardboard temporary is sent to use while waiting for the actual plate. If you want to be sure, find a place on the application to write "Please send me a cardboard temporary".
