Based on what you are describing, it is probably a extra large PPV (Positive Pressure Ventilation) unit for larger buildings. The smaller ones are usually powered by Honda 5HP engines and use a wooden blade that is approximately 24 to 30 inches. I would imagine the Seattle trucks have them. Essentially, they place it at an opening at a low point (usually the front door of a residence or "Side A") making sure the airflow covers the entire opening or a "seal" over the door. Then they create an opening for an exit point on the opposite side and blow the smoke out. When the building is filled with smoke and you are trying to do mopup, they work quite well!

$250,000 fire at downtown Seattle building

The Associated Press

SEATTLE Investigators have determine that a fire at a downtown Seattle building was accidentally started by an electrical problem in a ground-floor restaurant.

Fire Department spokeswoman Dana Vander Houwen says damage is estimated at $250,000.

Two people suffered minor injuries in the fire about 4 a.m. Tuesday at the nine-story Downtowner Apartment building in Seattle's International District.

Fire Department spokeswoman Helen Fitzpatrick says one elderly resident with breathing trouble and a firefighter with a knee injury were taken to a hospital.

Firefighters confined the fire to the V Garden seafood restaurant.

Smoke in the upper stories forced many residents to wait in Metro buses while firefighters cleared the air.
