I tried bypassing King County and going directly to the source for a public records request. I'm not surprised it got denied, but here's what they sent me:

The release of the talkgroup ID numbers would allow an individual to monitor, intercept and or terminate communication among the talkgroups, thereby rendering the talkgroups useless. Finally, this list is shared with federal agencies for purposes that include domestic preparedness for terrorist acts.

Note to all PDs in King County: your radios are now useless because I monitor and intercept communication among your talkgroups.

Persuant to RCW 42.56.420 (1) and (2) these records are exempt because their disclosure would jeopardize the integrity of the system and thus public safety.

They always play up the terrorist meme when all else fails.

We went through this same issue now almost 3 years ago..

See the thread here:

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1038&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

I see nothing has changed.. But their argument of claiming that the release of the talkgroup ID numbers doesn't seem to hold, logically. It would be interesting to test this in court. I'm sure if we brought a lawsuit against the county, we would probably win. I'm sure there are good FOIA lawyers out there.

But that would require a significant amount of time and money on our part. The county knows that, and they are probably counting on that.

In HS, I was on my school's television station and took a seminar from the Student Press Law Center about how to go about getting records from government agencies.

The presenter mentioned a few cases where students requested records (cafeteria inspection records, bus repair records, etc) where they were denied of course citing its a matter of national security. The solution he mentioned in that case if its obviously not a national security risk is to contact both your local DA and the state's attorney general who can go after the agency in question for hiding public records.

Hmmm...My request for the school district's channel plan and freqs went well enough, maybe I'll try Puyallup PD. They are, after all 75% encrypted.

I already have the FD's talkgroups, and Lakewood PD's...

Heard a "Sound 20" unit check in this morning on King County North (F2) this morning - perhaps sound transit will go through county sheriff?

They are dispatched by the County, but they're on Transit PD (23952) which is often patched to KCSO North.

"Sound 20"? Blech. I'd hate to have to say that all day as a dispatcher. IMO, it would have made more sense to keep the Transit designator and change the unit numbers. 1xx Metro, 5xx Sound Transit for exmaple... anything but Sound...
