I've always wondered what happened to the 640 and 1240 stations like KFI and KGY and others. Did they sign off and another transmitter take over the CONELRAD or were they the originating stations, 640 being a clear channel. We had an old 62' Mercury wagon that had the hash marks at 640 and 1240. I think I asked my dad and he didn't know... |

The modern equivalent is an LP-1 station that covers an EAS Local Area. In some areas the LP-1 stations may be fed from state sources originating on VHF/UHF frequencies. This link has a good diagram and explanation: http://transition.fcc.gov/pshs/techtopics/techtopics21.html |

actually I was thinking what happened during the days of CONELRAD if a 640 or 1240 had to sign off, what took over on that freq and from where? |

.... They didn't "completely" sign off... but would periodically transmit civil-defense related stuff... everybody else had to cease transmitting. It was thought Soviet bombers would utilize broadcast signals to DF their targets... so in the event of an attack this system was devised to CONtrol ELectromagnetic RADiation... Some neato vids on Youtube... Eric KB7DQH |

I've heard from a few old timer engineers that during the CONELRAD era, there was some AM transmitters that didn't like being turned on and off constantly and had some failures. |
