I do a huge amount of TV listening 81.75..... With DTV can I use a P25 scanner (396) and hear KING TV audio? And where? Thanks.

I don't envision scanners having ATSC/8VSB reception capability anytime soon.

You'll probably be stuck with tuning in 161/450mhz remotes or 944-952mhz STL.

Of course you get always get a HTDV USB stick if you carry around a laptop...

Thanks for the info Rich. That's a real bummer. Even in little disasters TV seems to do a better job than radio - even without the picture. I'm guessing that cable systems and will still run the same old freq setup to the end users and hotels will still run pay viewing on the UHF freq's. Will that end when all the TV's are replaced with current HD TV's?

all depends on the provider comcast was scheduling a partial hack up mid year I think its like channel 1-30 or something that will still be analog. as for hotels they commonly run what is called a LogeNet or similar service would likely have other hardware to deal with the issues.

Its a game of available bandwidth which varies per system. Some cable operators are running separate analog/digital, some are simulcasting both, and others are going all digital and requiring people to get a low end box (Motorola DCT700) to watch digital on an analog TV.

Cable companies use QAM modulators for their HD/digital so the "new" basic cable will be unencrypted QAM rather than piping it down the cable in the off-air ATSC format. Most digital TV's these days have a built in QAM tuner for this purpose.

now that TV is dead, I thought to scan for audio on the TV channels, figuring it would be dead....

in renton there are some spanish only channels... like ch5 picks up some spanish tv that is super odd.

The cut was for full power stations. Many low power and translators are still out there. 5 in Renton is odd though. Conditions seem doubtful for skip/tropo (especially at that freq). Perhaps you are picking up someones cable leakage ?

Way back when I could get some spanish-language skip in Seattle on ch.3 when conditions were right.

I went to the effort of pluggin in a old TV to see what it was brodcasting

its a how to use DTV infomercials they flip from english to spanish every 20 min or so

the strange part is there is no commercials - no station ID except for the every 20 min mark saying "KING 5 MEDIA" but nothing fancy.

It is kinda odd to flip around and have nothing but static, even with my TV hooked up to my scanner discone up on the roof (i have not used broadcast analog for many many years it was the best antenna I could whip up :)
