Ok I checked it this morning at about 6:00am.. no interference. sounded clear as a bell. Just turned it on now this evening as I got home.. The sound is there!!! :| Very annoying.. It is almost as if its some sort of electrical interference, as if something was turned on at a certain time and runs and if you were to shut it off it would stop. I wonder if its something in a condo unit above or below us.? Its so annoying that i can't keep it on the station.. almost drowns out the audio.. :(

Sounds like IBOC. From someone near KOMO's frequency. 980 in Canada ? 1010 or 1020 at night. The night-time IBOC counld be from some distant station. The day-time noise would be local. ---- KGA has a request to DROP night-time power - so that the new owners (Mapleton Bc) can increase night-time power on a co-owned station near San Francisco. So much for hearing KGA at night.

If its IBOC, would it then happen at the same time everyday?

The guys that design the AM broadcast towers and associated ground planes have my  Ive been learning a bit from a co-worker that has an AM transmitter from the early days he's tuned for amateur stuff. Bought it on Ebay. Shipping was a joy!

Another way to verify is to drive away from your building and see if the interference is local or if it stays with you anywhere you go. (leave all personal electronics home.. trust me)

Live near a marina?

KGA was recently purchased, and then came the program change. It's now an all sport program. No more Rollye James http://www.rollye.net/ all night.

KGA rolled over to 790 KJRB (sounds familiar), not sure how their night power/range is.

Ok, The "IBOC" or alleged "IBOC" is still there as of this morning at 6:00am and this evening as well. Its on both of my portable Radios, My RCA/GE Superadio III and my Emerson AM/FM Multi-band reciever.
I went out into the living room and flipped on the big stereo to try that. Its there as well but not as strong. No interference in the car.. Lets see.. No marina near me. Across the street is a Mc D's and a Brand new not opened yet drive-thru Starchucks. Noticed this evening that Comcast looks to be still doing work here as the cable box down in front of our building is still open and has piles of coax hanging out, looking to be connected to splitters or some sort of connectors... .Still wondering if its them or possibly now thinking something to do with Starchucks? But then again why is it only on KOMO 1000 and no other Am stations? Its not as if its a wide range issue. its 1 station so that kinda says its them and not my radios.. anyone know how to get ahold of an engineer or tech that works for KOMO?

I sorta consider myself a Drive Thru expert (worked in one for 2 years and I try to find freqs anytime I'm near them), and I'll say with 95% certainty that it's not them. Most systems are VHF, UHF, 900, or 2.4 GHz. Probably won't be long before they start moving into the 5.8 and 6.0 bands too. The lowest any of them go are around 30 MHz; any lower than that would use too much power and audio quality would suffer.

Man Made electrical noise is causing alot of interference to the entire AM band. The old KIXI - 910 khz - had lots of problems - before they moved to 880. The new Downtown Electic buses were re-rebuilt but had very little electical noise protection. The entire downtown was noise to any AM radio. Metro transit had to spend money to get rid of all of the electic "poping" noise. KIXI had an "IF" problem with 910 Khz being a product of 455 Khz - the standard AM "IF" frequency. That went away when they moved to 880 Khz. Even the NEW light bulbs cause electical noise as well as alot of new dimmer switches and other man made devices. Man made electrical noise and IBOC. The two new "Killers of AM radio".

Call KOMO and ask to speak to one of the enginners. Explain your problem and ask if they or some other local station are using IBOC. But it could be just noise from the local area or powerlines. New Construction = more electrical noise.

This problem is coming and going. It was crisp and clear a hour or so ago when the Mariner game was on and the aftershow. Turned it off for a few, came back in the room and turned it on here about 8:30 or so and its back! I'm now pretty convinced its something someone is running here in this building. The loud buzzing sound is fading and increasing as if something else electrical is running and overpowering it causing interference. How would one go about finding this source? This is now driving me insane!

Is this unit that you're mainly using plugged into the wall? Try a battery operated unit while you hear the interference and see if it's still present on the battery operated radio.
