Post subject:  L.E.R.N Problem

Last night I was listening to a chase on WSP Yakima 154.920. After about 10 min on the chase the trooper inovolved with the chase decided to go to the LERN Channel 155.3700. I listened on LERN but the problem is that I could hear the dispatcher talking but I could not here ther troopers/sherriffs deputies at all. I thought it was a problem with my scanner but I swiched scanners and had the same problem. I used to be able to hear both ends on that channel. Anyone know whats going on?

The main Yakima WSP freq is repeated. LERN is simplex so you can probably hear the base station better than a mobile unit. (Just a guess)

I've noticed the exact same thing up here when units switch to LERN on a chase. Pretty aggravating when the field units are out of range.

Are you using the hand-held with the rubber antenna?
Herein lays the problem (as previously stated).
For around $40-50, one can install an external antenna rooftop. Unless there's geographical blockage, this should solve most of the problem.

Everybody else has pretty much summed it up here. Yes, WSP Yakima is repeated 154.920 (173.8 ) (damn smileys....)

I was at work last night during the chase and didn't get to hear it, but that's usually the case. WSP dispatch on LERN is very, very strong, as are YSO and YPD dispatch, but the field units, not so much. I have a Kenwood TK-7180 hooked to VHF antenna in my attic (2nd story) via some LMR-400 (low loss cable) and most of the time can hear the field units.

It also has to do with placement in the valley and where you are at. I'm in the area of 72nd Ave out in West Valley and when East Valley is operating on a tac channel, since they are at a high end of the valley, I can hear them using simplex on tac 3 via my scanner no problem.

If you'd like help installing or improving your setup, let me know, sounds like were in the same area.
