I was wondering how popular the use of APRS is in the Pac Northwest and what other radios have the firmware+TNC built in for its use.

I am looking to buy a new radio and the Kenwood D700A seems like the right choice.

APRS seems very interesting to me and I am finally getting an itch for 2m/70cm comms!

Any info good or bad on APRS and the Kenwood D700 would be appreciated.

APRS is quite popular around here. This area has a very good network in place to support APRS operations.

The local information source is http://www.nwaprs.info You can start there for some good information about APRS.

As for the D700 - I have one, and it's a great radio. Besides being a very capable dual band radio, the built in TNC and APRS functionality allows for a quick and easy APRS tracker.

This area also has a UHF 9600 baud APRS network, and the D700 is able to access that system as well. The UHF system works from Seattle to Mt. Vernon.

Hello Larry,
I run a digipeater up in Sedro Woolley and see a lot of traffic not only from the Seattle but well up into Canada. If you decide to follow through with APRS, I recommend following up on the link that was stated in the ealier posting. It has a lot of great information for the beginer. Also, there is a reflector that you can subscribe to. In that forum, there are many around that can assist in getting started.
I hope to see your system tracking along sometime soon.
