Personally, no, but why pay $32 for a capacitively coupled ground radial when you can have a direct coupled radial by tying a 21" piece of copper wire around the base of the antenna connector ?

That thought crossed.

I guess with the sunken SMA and possibly compromising the "submersible" (splash) integrity, $30 isn't much. I know people who waste money on worrrse things for the hobby(ie).
The lack of RF pollution where I'm at, plus lack of cell service and abundance of predatory wildlife makes portable 2-meter simplex interesting.

I've seen something similar on the commercial side years ago.

I'll tell you how it works; ordered.

I tested one of the old style models on an IC-02AT in 1990, and the only time I could hear an audible improvement was while listening to a distant repeater. I was on the East Hill of Kent, and all the 'King County' repeaters were too close for me to be able to hear an improvement, but when working an 'Olympia' repeater, I was able to hear an improvement while the Rat Tail was attached to the BNC connector.

Working simplex 6.5 google earth miles, it's reported my signal went from s-1 to s-5.
