Post subject:  2m 70cm outdoor antenna
I know this is somewhat of a loaded question. But looking for some suggestion for a decent dual band antenna that does not cost a small fortune. It will be mounted to the side of a shed on a mast so I have lots of room to play with.

I currently have a discone 25-1300MHZ (ebay speacial) antenna that is somewhat of an improvement over the duck antenna. It works great for scanner reception, but I'm sure there are better options when it comes to transmitting.

I made one from copper pipe.
It does great. Never higher than 2:1 @ 170mhz, 1.2:1 @ 146.520mhz, 1:1 @ 446mhz.
With the radio shack 259 part it cost around $8.

I've used both the Comet and Diamond verticals (both short and long) with great success. Currently have a 6/2/440 on the roof now.

A popular product that can be home brewed for cheap and isn't too expensive store bought is the J-pole made from rod and a short piece of angle stock.

Arrow Antennas has one for under $40 and it should be bulletproof. I have a similar one that I bought at Puyallup a couple of years ago. A club made 'em for a fundraiser.

Ya know I have heard people on the radio talk about the J-pole antenna a lot. But I just don't know anything when it comes to them. Or other dual band for that matter.

I have been eying the Comet GP dual band series.

As I see it, the J-pole is a cheap homebrew antenna that I have liked very much. The Comets cannot be homebrewed but that isn't a concern of yours. It has worked well for me.

I have a GP-9 with roughly a 50' run of LMR 400 I would be willing to sell. I took it out of service when I moved and have not got around to putting it up. Worked great when it was up, low swr across both bands. I could work Canadian repeaters from south King County at 300' ASL. PM me if interested.

I have used a Comet dual band - unknown model but "short" with great results for nearly 20 years (same antenna).

It gave very good "plug and play" performance.

So I ended up getting a comet GP1. Got it mounted on top of my place at about 35'
Very happy with it. No problem hitting the Pilchuck or Tiger Mtn repeaters now.
