I use 220 in my Kenwood F6A more than I do 144. Works just fine from a handheld (though the stock Kenwood antenna doesn't work that great on 220, but that's hardly the fault of the radio itself).
220 is far more useful in an HT than 50mhz (as some competing HT's offer as their third band).
However, if you want to do APRS from a portable, or have some kind of portable data need, then the D7A won't disappoint either. I have one of those, too. It's also a great radio.
As a daily driver, I prefer my F6A (smaller size, better battery performance, 220mhz coverage....).
Your mileage may vary....
