http://www.yaesu.com/indexVS.cfm?cmd=Di ... Archived=0 Yaesu announced that they are not going to do D-STAR and will be going to a DMR/Motorbro using the DMR-MARC network (http://www.dmr-marc.net). Not only are they not using D-STAR but slams D-STAR. |

True, but I have never seen one manufacture bad mouth another. I personally would want a 2 time slot TDMA system over D-STAR. I don't think you can put two D-STAR systems back to back on 6.25. Even though TRBO is 12.5, you get two voice channels on a single repeater. I wounder if this radio will work on existing TRBO systems.... |

D-STAR has that bleed over issue that Icom is quietly ignoring as well. I knew Yaesu wouldn't support D-STAR...and this is good news! |

The protocol is quite good, as it integrates our call signs for signaling, where all other "solutions" require a work around that involves aliasing, registries etc... |

One Ham on another form said this that I agree 100% with... "It's a pity that the digital amateur radio market is going to be just as fragmented as the digital commercial market. Will the Yaesu/Motorola love child be an "open standard"? At least Icom only owns the name D-Star and not the protocol." The argument could be said that there is a dozen digital modes on HF. At least I can buy one box that does all of the modes, the same can't be said with digital voice. As far as the amateur off the self world goes, you have DV from alinco, DV from Icom/dstar and now Yaesu. Then commercially you have P25, DMR/Mototrbo, NXDN, IDAS, X2-TDMA and OpenSKY that can all be used on Amateur frequencies. Good luck trying to get one radio that does all of that. I believe it's getting to the point where you have to pick one protocol and stick with it... |

While I want a radio that does it all, and it would be "nice" if there was one protocol.. HAM radio is about innovation and creativity.. I wish it wasn't picking up commercial standards. I wish it was about blazing a trail to the future. All the above technologies are yesterday's news. Lets see LTE or beyond.. |

An already developed protocol is a lot cheaper than making one from scratch for the amateur market (and more likely to make a profit off of it). D-STAR was originally developed for the post office in Japan (Japan government paid for the R&D). They abandon it and used it for D-STAR. They tried again with enchantments and got IDAS out of it. |

OpenSKY to my knowledge is it's own proprietary protocol belonging to Harris Corp, formerly M/A Comm, formerly... ah forget it... |

HAMs should go poke the AARL in their side and get them to lobby the manufacturers for what the HAM community REALLY wants... and then watch the competition occur as they try to fulfill the demand. Until that happens, you'll continue to get whatever the OEM thinks you want. It worked for government and then public safety after APCO was formed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_25#History |
