From an email I received this afternoon:

"I am saddened to announce that Gene Underwood, W7AKA, became a silent key yesterday.

Gene, an extremely active 'public service' participant, will be greatly missed. Gene's zeal for Ham Radio and Public Service has been an example and encouragement for many other Hams in Western Washington, for a very long time.

Please keep Gene's wife and family in your prayers and thoughts as they move through this loss and the difficult times ahead.

Details on Services will be announced when they have been established."

I've know Gene for over 25 years, and have been helping to support "his" events for most of those years. He and his wife Fran have been the prime Ham organizers for many running and bicycle events over the years - a huge undertaking, but done with great efficiency and sacrifice on their part.

His dedication to public service in the Washington State area was amazing. Even battling cancer, he still managed to organize the hams and provide Net Control during the recent Seattle Marathon. He was a very good man, and will be missed.

Gene gets a sticky for the foreseeable future. Funeral arrangements will be posted here.
