I'm not a big fan of it just by its looks. At least you dont need a bulky gps speaker mic (I wounder how well the gps operates on your belt). I also dont like the fact that it doesn't have a full keypad (can't do DTMF) and is only UHF...on the flip side I cant remember the last time I put in a frequency after I used the software to program it or sent DTMF and most DSTAR repeaters around here are UHF. Yeah it def will be interesting how certain features work. I'm kind of done with handhelds for the moment. 5w just isn't enough power these days and especially around here -- that's presuming your battery lasts more than a few hours. The model number makes no sense. They call it ID-31, however in early ICOM models, HAM rigs that began with 3 were 220MHz range. If this is in fact a 440 MHz radio, the traditional numbering would have it as an ID-41. NOT that ICOM will likely manufacture 220, but that is not the point. For decades, ICOM used model numbers as follows: beginning with 2 = 2 Meters beginning with 3 = 1.25 Meters (220 MHz) beginning with 4 = 70 CM (440 MHz) beginning with 5 = 6 M (50 MHz) beginning with 12 = 23 CM (1240 MHz) So much for consistency... |

Hmm perhaps they did at one time but not recently... :) Icom V-8000 = 2m only Icom 80AD = 2m/440 Icom 91/92 = 2m/440 |

Yeah it looks kind of neat. I'm curious what the cost will be. Why on earth would anyone want to record d-star conversations to a microSD? Has anyone listened to ham radio converstations lately? :D |

You can leave messages for the user(s) or leave an auto reply if someone would be trying to get a hold of you. The gateways kind of have this feature. I think it would be cool if it recorded a 3 min loop so if you missed anything, you could play it back. |

FYI, I just glanced at the new product documentation and there's no mention of this feature. It can "record and play incoming and outgoing calls" and save gps logs/data as well as personalized radio settings, memories, etc. http://www.icomamerica.com/en/downloads ... cument=562 |

A lot of battery-powered devices have the capability of recording. The IC-91AD and the IC-92AD can record up to 2 or 3 minutes worth of audio. Uniden scanner can record and has playback...GRE PSR-800 scanner can record as well. Both require a SD memory card while the IC-91ad and the IC-92AD storage is on the circuit board. |
