Has anyone had any luck programming Icoms using a USB cable with Windows 7?

Haven't tried it on 7, but I have had issues with doing Icom radios over USB. Some just won't do it.

In an XP environment, an extensive series of tests using 2005 vintage Radio Shack USB -> RS232 adapter, with drivers properly installed, the only one that did not work was the bastard step-child that is the F4TR.

If you have drivers installed, I think WIN 7 has some form of "compatibility" mode you may want to try.


Me, I'm fighting old Kenwoods right now. GOTTA have an actual DOS environment. - DOH!

I've found a Windows 98 boot disk (turned into a CD on PCs that don't have a floppy drive) works wonderfully for this.

Yeah I am digging mine out too.
My work computer dual boots XP/DOS, as some of our old stuff is the same way. Going to try that tomorrow.

I have updated recently to Win 7 from XP and had no problems with the RS cable when using XP.

Win 7 is 64 bit compared to XP with 32 bit and I am having problems finding a driver that will work with the Icom
programs.

The RS cable works fine with Win 7 and RS scanners. Win 7 installed the driver automatically that worked with
the RS scanners.

The Icom programs are a poor programs to begin with. They seem to be like programs from years ago that are in a bad need of updating. :roll:

I use a rat shack cable with the updated drivers from windows update, no issues here.

Try Prolific brand RS-232 to USB cables. They've worked well in the shop and Moto radios even seem to like them.

There is Win 7 native programming software and USB cables and drivers available for Icom LMR so hopefully their next release of HAM gear will have it too.

Windows 7 comes in both 64 and 32 bit flavors actually.

Windows XP does as well. It's the only way you can have more than 2.5 GB of RAM in your system (rather, you can have that much RAM, the OS just won't recognize it)
