I was looking at the map search for King County "Amateur Radio" in this forum and noticed CSQ listed in several instances under the PL tone. I Googled CSQ and it indicated carrier squelch. Can you please let me know what this is/means? I am trying to learn. Many thanks, |

Many thanks, It means you don't need a tone to activate the repeater (no PL or Digital tone needed). All you need is to transmit a carrier to bring up the repeater. |

You know how PLs and DPLs work? It's similar, but instead of the radio listening for a continuous tone to stop, it listens for a "clear" transmission to stop. Think of CSQ as working the same way the squelch knob on your scanner works. Once you've set it to the proper threshold, it mutes the audio when nothing is transmitting, and by transmitting, I mean a "clear" signal. Whoever contributed to Wikipedia kinda failed at explaining it, though I don't doubt my explanation is kinda fuzzy. |

Thank you both for the information. I believe I now understand what it means. The information couldn't have too fuzzy. Between the two of you I seemed to understand it. Thanks again, |
