Post subject:  Ebay and Ham Radio accessories
I have been looking at Ebay and have found quite a few accessories from vendors in Hong Kong, Singapore, etc. Although some carry the name of know brands, Yeasu or Kenwood as examples, when the vendors are contacted they admit it is an aftermarket product. I am talking about antennas, speaker mics, etc.

Has anyone had experiences, positive or negative, with making purchases from these type of vendors. Before I make any purchases I would like a general idea as to other peoples results. It should be noted that they are generally priced consierably less than those purchased in the USA. I like to save money when I can, but I don't like being ripped off or suckered.

Depends on what you're buying. I've never purchased a radio, but I've bought some accessories. It takes two weeks to get here, but the price is generally worth it. kawarad and kawa (same seller, different items) have some stuff you can try to get your feet wet, and it ships from Kansas or somewhere in the midwest. I bought a couple of accessories from them. Good value for the price, but definitely not super-high quality stuff.

I know that I will get some bad feed back on this but about four years a go I bought this http://www.usa-battery.com/new-quanshen ... p-747.html I got a VHF and a UHF model theses radios are wide open you can broadcast on any freq that you want both still work great today and are knock offs Motorola radios they are great radios and both where under $80 at the time with shipping it took about 9 days to get them, I have bought Meany items from the country we are talking about I am not happy that I did this at the time but it was a great deal, think about it two radios vhf and UHF that have all of the function of the more costly radios for about a 1/16th of the cost.

As long as you only use it on ham frequencies (Since I assume the FCC hasn't approved these for type-specific use like marine or 2m commercial bands), is there any legal issue with these radios? They are pretty tempting for the prices they're offered for.

So long as you can prevent it from causing harmful interference, you're fine. Cool thing about the ham bands is that we can throw anything we want on there. You could build your own radio and use that to talk, again, making sure you're not causing harmful interference.
And as you mentioned, they're not allowed anywhere else because they're not type approved (regardless of whether or not you're licensed to transmit there). This includes GMRS and MURS.

My understanding of the law is, you as the HAM are legal modulating a toaster, as long as you stay within basic spec as Taco says.

However the seller is breaking the law, as even HAM gear needs FCC approval to be sold.

Refer to any new cut sheet from a ICOM/KENWOOD/Yeasu that is being pre-introduced.

Currently IC-9100 has the disclaimer at the bottom.
Google and you will see.

I too have been tempted to buy some of those.
I am, after all, a HAM...
