I haven't ever had much interest in APRS mostly for the fact that you must use the internet for anything "real" or more important my data will show up on someone else's server which I dont like the idea of. This evening however I thought I would tinker with it using AGWPE (free) I installed and got it working, tuned up to 144.390 .shit what a mess that frequency is. I have a old TNC around here but its old and I dont want to fuss. So after watching about a million packets flow and thinking cool that was easy to set up I pulled down the same authors AGW tracker, nifty I can decode things.. Then pulling down a copy of mapoint (I have unlimited msft toys) I hooked AGWtracker to map point. seems that I have just created a "free" (minus the mappoint) database of reading APRS around me with no internet... is this correct? what else cool can I do? I dont know that I actually want to transmit APRS but it seems that I am accurately downloading and mapping data.. I know there isnt much else but is there anything fun I can do from here? |

you can send messages.. kinda like a PM through the airwaves... like a cellphone.. just more complicated.. :D You can also use those messages to control devices, turn on/off transmitters, etc. There is weather data attached to some APRS stations. I vaguely recall of an incident in Australia I believe it was where someone used APRS to find a car and steal all of his ham gear out of it... But I don't remember any of the details. |

About your comment about internet & APRS. All the APRS-IS servers do is beacon out packets to clients connected. They do not store anything really; but systems like aprs.fi and findu do store your position data; but you can also send a command to erase your data if you want to. I forget what it is, but its there. |

ahh thanks I will have to check that out, yea I just dont like the idea of being tracked with open source data all the time, its funny to watch people drive around with the same path every day |
