anyone get a WA auto plate for HAM lately, can assist in how this works? I took the forum into a DOL-subagent to find out the price I need to send to olympia she went on about how I need to pay a custom plate fee. I argued with her for a while that this isnt a custom plate and that its a HAM plate and she said "we cant do that" I said yes I know I just need to know the price.. which got me back at the price for a custom plate.

whats the scoop on the price that I need to pay to send a check to Olympia? is it better to wait till my tabs are expired as it looks like i need to pay for new tabs with it?

So according to DOL it costs you $5.

oh yes i have been to that page and asked questions of the subagent-DOL

what is standard licensing fee? do i need to pay that?

the problem is only olympia or king county office will answer the subagents just say "we cant do that" or provide uneducated info.

so how much is it? 5+??? what is a standard fee?

By saying 'Ham' you may have got 'em thinking about lunch.

Amateur radio operator (HAM) plates

Anyone with a license issued by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) may get one set of amateur radio operator (HAM) plates for one vehicle registered in their name. The license plates show the call letters assigned by the FCC.

That would be whatever you normally pay to license your car.


Well if they say "$5 plus standard licensing fees" then the answer would be yes.

has anyone done this process and can tell me what they paid. the DOL branch near me that I went to couldnt answer claiming I need to pay for a custom plate fee of 50$

I did it in 1995. It was $10 then. The licensing period on your vehicle changes I think at that point, but it's prorated if I recall. I did it at the DOL HQ office in Olympia, the so called brain trust of the DOL. They closed that office last year but they knew what they were doing or they went in the back and asked. The subagents imo are worthless. They get to charge their own subagent fee because they are contracted, plus how often do they see a Ham radio application? I would seriously find a regular DOL office. It's good its dropped to 5 bucks

ahh ok... so did you pay the 10$ + the fee for tabs? was that the "normal fee" and did they send you tabs again - so would it be worth the time to wait till tabs are due anyway?

when you say offical DOL I assume KC or Oly? the list on the site has mostly subcontractors

Let me think about this. I got a temp paper from them to hang on the rear window than said KC7xxx and then the vanity plates arrived with new tabs the month I went in, courtesy of Walla Walla or Monroe. I don't know if I paid additional fees besides the $10 that would of been the prorated amount that I paid with the previous plates or it ran it's course til the next licensing period. I do know he told me it was considered a public service that hams paid a low amount for vanity plates.

Make sure you have a copy of your amateur license with you when you apply.

awesome TU, that was what I suspected and will now try and find some DOL person that can file this. any other feedback would be welcome (please from plate owners only or people who have done this, I have read the site and talked to ..un informed DOL employees)

I don't see the point.

1- If you have your home address on your license, you're giving anyone with Google-Fu or a little knowledge of radio your home address. It's like posting your location. "Hey, that's Kelly, my smartphone Google app ( :puke: ) says he lives at 123 1st Street, and he's obviously not home...Let's go score some pawnable radio gear!" Or, they Google the plate, get your address, and wait outside your home to express their displeasure at your driving prowess.

2- Same lines...Your plate tells everyone you're a ham. Some lowlife is going to see the plate and assume there's pawnable radio gear in the car. You stopped at Fred Meyer for some cheese, eggs and maybe a sixer of Amstel Lite and come out to find- wait, why the hell is my window broken and where in the hell is my laptop and Icom????

Bunnery definition for the under-fives

1) They are stalking and a call to the police and/or your sidearm will change their mind.
2) I had my car broken into and I don't have ham plates. They did not take my radios, but instead took my bluetooth GPS, a Jedi battery, my iPhone charger and 3 cans of Grape Soda from my cooler.

However, I will be getting ham plates soon. I know the Oregon DMV office near me gets applications for ham plates all the time.

I have auto insurance, if they steal things, that's why I pay for insurance. I don't keep anything that cant be replaced in my cars... been there had the window glass or missing car. whine about it punch a wall and move on :)

I totally understand your point I teach security - but either you live in fear and don't have fun, you pretend that you have security in this world. Or...

you get a old Truck with K7MHI plate while I wear my foam hat with K7MHI on it. boo yea.

I could go on for years about "security" lots of FUD and lots of things you can do to protect your self. all in the eye of the beholder I guess. Public record what it is any more who needs a ham plate and google-fu? I just need your name and city that you might live in I can get more public record on you then you know about with a dinky little PI license for 300 bucks a year. ...but I digress not to jack my own thread.
