YES I can I teach a class and this is the first slide!

basically HAM is a term created by the telecommunications back in the day for a poor(cash) operator's in the industry.

as people in "ham radio" are not amateur's since we are FCC tested the term HAM signifies a non professional (now a days). as most Ham's are Professional in their behavior and equipment the term amateur don't apply as much. so that is the best way to define the term today.. (read we know what we are doing but don't have the cash of a commercial or government outlay)

back in the day..it was a derogatory term used by the military and commercial operators for HAM's (poor operators making a mess in the sense of cash and skill), there is no good origin its just used because it is :) the prior paragraph is the common now'a'days accepted

Amateur means your not paid. It can mean not skilled but not in the sense the FCC meant.

Professional means you are paid. According to the FCC.

Its not meant to define Skills. I just look at a few "professional" radio techs I know of...

And reading through the ARRL link you provided, this would be my point:

Amateurs, possibly unfamiliar with the real meaning of the term (Ham), picked it up and applied it to themselves in true "Yankee Doodle" fashion and wore it with pride. As the years advanced, the original meaning has completely disappeared. or...there is no metonymical difference. They are considered one in the same!

I think this was just a dig at sentence structure, not an actual question. Amirite?
