Any suggestions for a dual band (V/U) for a senior (89 yrs). Something that could be programmed to like 20 repeaters. Would have to be idiot proof. Just one knob to tune through and one knob for the sound everything else pre-programmed. Thanks.

Commercial Gear. It would take two units but pretty easy.

Hmm... I don't know of any simple dual banders. Perhaps the Alinco GX7T ... but hard to say without looking at the manual.

For single band, the Yaesu VX-270 is simple. (It's the new version of the VX-170.) It's just 2 meters but they're tough as nails (milspec tough.) Very loud audio output too... which might be a good thing at that age.

I have a VX-170. The audio is incredible, as loud as my mobile in the truck. Program it and stick it in 'memory only' mode for "idiot proof".
It's a ham version from a Vertex-Standard commercial model.
And cheap.

Yep... the VX-170 is cool but Yaesu just discontinued it... replaced it with the VX-270. It's the same thing - I'm not sure what they "changed."

My Alinco 220 handheld can be programmed to act as you describe - not sure if their dual-band stuff works the same.

The VX270 has 800mw audio which is louder than the previous 170 but it still a mono bander.

Hopefully the 270 filters the ker-chunk when the carrier drops. That's really the only annoying thing about the 170.
