Post subject:  Best ham dualband in an emergency
Since many are ham's I thought I would ask this here. In an emergency what dualband ham HT would you not want to be without. No Motorola for this question just ham HT's that can be CAPized? CAPized because I'm thinking the big emergency where it might be good to have the ability to transmit out of band.

My vote is the 24AT because of the 6-AA case. My T90 only has two AA's so only low power.

The Alinco DJ-580T was a pretty sweet CAP portable. I had some friends that swore by the Kenwood TH-75...

What do you think of the X8 Three tuners AM/FM- U or V - U or V. Doesn't have the free band of the R7

Kenwood F6A. Great performer on all bands. Full power on 220 band (important to me). Covers lots of other bands, including AM broadcast and most shortwave bands (LSB/USB/CW, though a wire antenna helps there). And, fairly easy to program on the fly.

Though the LiON batteries seem to last forever, the downside is the alkaline packs - only allows for 1/2 watt high power. But, with a decent antenna, that should work in a pinch, anyway.

I have a W-32a, now obsolete. Agree that you need something that will take a half dozen AAs. Make sure you pick something that you remember how to program in the dark.

Agreed! I had a VX-7R. LOVED it but it was too small for me to grab. If you do the out of band mod, be carefull. The extra power that is reflected as a result of transmitting out of band makes this thing get REALLY hot and in a few minutes of use will start to deviate off it's programmed frequency.

EDIT: I did the hardware mod; before I knew this radio can be software modded. Software mod may not create such an issue with heat.

well I think it can be argued that you normally would never out of band work this radio. buy sticking with HAM equipment I feel that this radio is very important as you *CAN* in emergency work out of band the radio in which case we assume life liberty etc so the harm to the radio would be "justified"

i would agree that the software mod as well as the hardware would heat it up your gonna be pushing the RF for a lot of SWR as nothing is tuned for out of band.

Thats the big question on the 8R, whether or not it has the "freeband" TX/RX range of the 7R. Otherwise the dual receivers and APRS seem to be a nice upgrade over the 7R.

think we will have to wait till the vx8 comes out in more main stream I know a few people are getting them in the mail now, but no software for them yet... the x7 software here... http://www.kc8unj.com/ has nothing for x8 yet I would assume he would release software for the radio when he gets a chance as he was on the mark with the x7

Just picked up a VX-7R at Hamcity - not big in service, but the radio was $253.00. The freeband in this is truly amazing. I used to have the 5, what a huge change. I can tell I'm going to like this...bye. bye T-90.
