An already developed protocol is a lot cheaper than making one from scratch for the amateur market (and more likely to make a profit off of it). D-STAR was originally developed for the post office in Japan (Japan government paid for the R&D). They abandon it and used it for D-STAR. They tried again with enchantments and got IDAS out of it.

What...?

You will never see a company making amateur gear make a new standard and let alone try to sell it to other amateur companies. It would cost too much and never recover from the cost. So they will "Barrow" technology from their commercial side.

Meh...another child's toy.

We're getting ready to put back on the air a converted GE Mastr II here in Moses. Take your TRBO and NXDN repeaters and go jump in a lake. I'll take simple and cheap any day.

I got to meet Bob Kelty 10 or so years ago who worked for GE in the Bay Area. He had quite the collection of GE equip and has a few MASTR II around. I think they were the best GE product ever made and gave Moto a run for their money.
