Does anyone have a good solution for getting a 5W HT signal out of a car? I was thinking something like those scanner ant. that clip on a rolled up car window. Is there anything like that for an amature HT?

Yes they do. If you have one already for your scanner that clips onto your window they work really well. Just use the antanna for the ham radio. High Gain antanna works very well. HRO has them for $15.95 Part # IHC 19 Car Window Mount page 96 in the catalog. I use it when I'm traveling over the hill or out towards PA or Aberdeen when I'm working.

Is there any reason you can't use a mag mount or permanent mount antenna on your car?

Yup. Work car. Don't want to rust a hole...so you can imagine I don't want to drill on neither.

Is this your first radio? I went through the same situation and had the mag mounts but still suffered from low audio from the HT speaker. I just waited until I could scrape up more money and purchased a mobile and added a ext speaker to it. The hand held is good around town but I wouldn't add a lot of acessories to it if you plan on getting a mobile later on. But yes, an outside antenna will improve the signal.

I use the Same Radio and inside a 2000 Chev. Inpalla there is about 75% signal loss. Need to get a window mount for scaner/Ham radio when In use... Want to get a D7A so I can run the APRS a lot more often
