I was listening around 7pm today, 12/6/05 PST and heard a armed robbery via shotgun in the everett area. talkgroup 1648. I could only hear the dispatch side... none of the units responding could be heard..?

Motorola mode, Pro-97.

All the other talkgroups within this control channel were heard, as well as dispatch... what gives?

am I missing something?

TG 1648 is the Sno County SO South Talkgroup. Until SCSO switches over to the 800mhz system next year, this Talkgroup has been patched over to their current South frequency of 159.210. This is for the benefit of the agencies in Snohomish county that have switched over to 800mhz already, and wish to interop with SCSO.

In the confusion of patching/unpatching other stuff for this incident, the dispatcher may have inadvertantly disabled the patch - but was still transmitting his/her traffic on the talkgroup. If there's no one on 800mhz to notice the problem, then it could potentially go on for quite awhile - until the dispatcher notices the problem.

There may have been another reason, but that's the one that comes to mind first.

So, should I be listening to the VHF for SCSO... instead of the 800 Mhz trunked?

perhps that explains a lot of issues I have noticed with hearing all the players in an incident...

Snohomish County Sheriff is still on VHF conventional, so that is where you'll hear their operations. However, their VHF is not repeated - so, you're limited to whatever you can hear direct from your location.

If the patch is in place, it allows you to hear all of SCSO VHF traffic through the trunking system. You can hear both sides of the conversation and most field units all the time.

Bottom line - if the patch is working, it's the best way to listen to them. Otherwise, it's back to VHF simplex.

Even though SCSO is still on VHF you should be able to hear both dispatch and field units on the 800 side. I've been listening to them for a while now on 800. Occasionally, something happens with the patch and you'll loose either side. Then, I come here, make a post about it and it gets resolved. It's either good timing or someone who can fix it, see's the post and fixes it.

If YOU can't hear a side of the SCSO traffic on 800 then neither can anyone with an actual 800MHz radio. Lynnwood K9 has that SCSO TG in their radios for mutual aid... *brain storms worse case mutual aid scenario*

...and now that I've read the rest of the posts after posting the above, I agree with Brad's theory as a possible cause.
