My parents live on Anderson Island. I might be over there this weekend. I'll drop by the fire station and find out what I can. Hopefully they know something.

I know they have one station and is manned by the inmates, I think they have a paid Chief. They have a pair of 1995 International/H&W pumpers, a brush unit and two ambulances. That's all i know

Apparently they also have a fire boat.

Apprently the fire crew position is considered a Class II Industries position (not sure what it means). http://www.doc.wa.gov/facilities/miccdescription.htm

Here is an interesting article I came across of the Delware National Guard training with mcNeil Island fire departmenthttp://www.delawarenationalguard.com/dngnews/apr03/832nd.htm[/url]

The industries might be refering to the company DOC runs. Correctional Industries makes all sorts of furniture (McNeil, I think), the old standby plates (Walla Walla) and I thought Monroe did some stuff too. State and local agencies, as well as schools can purchase stuff at a huge discount from them. WSP and the new KCSO car radio consoles come from Walla Walla. The new picnic benches at State Parks come from there as well.

I used to work on the rock for about five years as a nurse. The fire department has a state employee chief and I think three "captains". The rest of the department is all inmate. They are fairly good and even have (former) paramedics from time to time. There was a former King County medic I worked with on the street that was an inmate. They are no longer EMT's or Medics because of the convictions but the knowledge is still there.

The department responds to not only the two prisons on the island, McNeil Island Correctional Center (MICC), and the Special Commitment Center (SCC) that houses violent sexual offenders and is run by DSHS, but also to the 80+ homes on the island that are occupied by DOC employees.

They have no "fire boat" but ther are a couple of open cabin aluminum patrol boats that they use to run patients to the Steilacoom dock.

I don't know what the frequency is but I remember that the radio was UHF, not 800 mhz.

inmates?!?!?!?! the ROCK?!?!?!?!?!
do not mean to pick a fight guys, but i worked at McNeil, and lived on the island, when it was Federal. we never called CONS inmates and the ONLY Rock is in SanFrancisco harbour.
at the time i was there, the convict fire department had two trucks and one ambulance. there was a workboat, brought up i believe from Alcatraz that did have pumps and nozzles, tho more frequently it functioned as a tug.
in case of work stoppage or riot, several of us residents were trained to take over fire fighting duties, i was a hose man!
