any advise for best base antenna for receiving King County/Tacoma/Puyallup 800mhz systems and sometimes vhf/uhf. Connected to Uniden 996xlt upgrading from 780xlt. thanks in advance
ps currently can not pick up Puyallup site, but do sometimes get tacoma, and always KC, using indoor antenna.

The Shack 800Mhz tuned antenna is a great deal for 20 bucks.

Discones are pretty good for multiband receive.

You should be able to pick up the King County system with no antenna.

I've been happy with the Antenna Craft ST-2. I have it mounted up about 35 ft. Held up well to the winds I get out here by Monroe and 3-4 heavy snows. I see it's gone up $6 to $33.95 at http://www.solidsignal.com/pview.asp?mc=03&p=ST2&d=AntennaCraft-ST2-Scanner-Antenna-Kit-with-50-Foot-Cable-%28ST2%29&c=TV%20Antennas&sku=

this outperforms my discone for 800mhz

http://cgi.ebay.com/800-MHz-Mobile-Ante ... 2a0d8d3382

just search 800mhz antenna on ebay, these things are cheap and last about 5-7 years before the weather eats them.

If you want to kick it up a notch stick it to something metal for a sudo ground plane cut a coffee can bottom out with a can opener and use that for example.

it dont need to cost a lot to work well.

I have one of those (got it here). I have found that it performs identical to the Radio Shack 800 BNC antenna.

Fixed the link. Yeah, they're cheap (I paid $3.30 in 2007!) but it takes a really long time to get here.

Check out this: DPD just upgraded their 700-1000 UHF antenna to include VHF. From the description, it sounds like he can customize the VHF/UHF part based on your needs.
Put up two for permanent mounting or have one on a rotator!

http://dpdproductions.com/page_scanner.html#uhflp

PS. I have the original 700-1000 antenna and it works great. I can get almost all of the trunking sites in the tri-county area.
