King5 just stated that 25% of WSP cars are undercover....

Yea, I saw that - and that undercover cars are a reward...

sigh. I think it contributes to the odd ducks to have so many undercover cars. I'm sure it does help them catch more folks but I'd rather all police cars be well marked.

I think the proper term for most of these cars is "unmarked" rather than "undercover". Most are Crown Vics or Impalas and have WSP plates, antennas, and visible emergency lights that make them stand-out as law enforcement vehicles even to the most casual observer. An exception is some of the ADAT cars, which have plain license plates and are a little harder to spot.

A true "undercover" car would typically be almost impossible to spot, have no visible antennas or lights, and could be almost any type of vehicle. Some agencies use cars confiscated from drug dealers as undercover cars and these could be almost anything.

They are using a 2009 Chevy Tahoe, black in color, here in the Moses Lake/Ephrata area. Regular plates and no lights. Only antenna looks like it is for a cell phone.

Personally, I like the ADAT.

Same old -- same old. The last time the WSP or others tried this ploy -- it caused a rash of "traffic offenders" -- mostly females -- not to pull over when "lighted up" and for the media -- to jump on the backs of all law enforcement agencies for not having "Marked" patrol cars for everyday traffic enforcement. And of course -- the courts agreed. Would you want your wife or daughter pulled over -- by a "fake police car" ????? "I didn't stop because I thought that jackass was a rent a cop - your honor." !!!!

And now we know the real reason you reside in Corcoran, California. (How is life in the gray bar hotel?) :-)

That's what you get for not stopping for the unmarked police vehicles!

The vast majority of "working" Troopers have marked cars. I wonder if that 25% figure is including the Sergeants, Lt's, and brass that have "unmarked" staff vehicles?

I have to agree with the "undercover" being more like "unmarked". I know a WSP trooper who works out of Vancouver and he either is driving a plain white CVPI or for something slightly less obvious, a Ford Taurus with a Larsen Window Mount antenna and lights in plain sight.

I've noticed lately more marked WSP cars where the guys have removed their lightbars. Kind of a "semi" unmarked...which I used to see quite a bit in the past. They should go back to the 80's when they were running the Dodge St. Regis for their cars and they were all different colors with the thunderbolt on the door. That was kind of cool!

Our local pilot (426) does not use a light bar on his Crown Vic.

I did happen to see 3 troopers (302, 971, 1116), 1 pilot (426), and 1 detective (468) at lunch today in Moses Lake. It was GREAT seeing their Kenwood TK-290 portables!

I see they are going back to colored cars here on the west side. I had 3 of them (775, 517 and 901) go past me on I-90 and they were all marked CVPI's in Dark Blue, Blue or Black and a Tan. They apparently got rid of the bolts and now only have the emblem/seal. 517 didn't have a lightbar on his.

I have seen their true undercover cars, I have seen them in pretty much anything you can think of trucks, cars, minivans, but the best was the 1989 Toyota Tercel... Looked just like this... with a trooper standing in the open door on a gore point with a LiDAR... I almost had to double back to get a picture... Looked like the WSP was out of money...
