OOOOHHH. That's my old tree house. Great place to sit and listen to a scanner.

In addition to the big sirens, there were smaller ones on several fire stations. And one on a pole at Boyer Ave E. and E. Lynn St. near a church that had some unusual architecture.

When I worked in Umatilla they had sirens around the area;to alert on chemical leaks. In addition, each residence was issued a "chemical leak kit". Had a WX alert radio, duct tape and plastic sheeting.
Made me feel safe.

Anybody who lived in the Puget Sound Seattle area in the 60's and 70's should remember on every Wednesday at 1200 Noon for 30 seconds the sirens would go off.

Kennewick one on a tall wooden pole at the old station on Washington St, that operated at 12 noon most days up until the early 70's. One time in the middle of the night in the mid 60's, it went off and I woke up my mom and told her it was time for Paul Harvey.

Used to do it everyday at noon in Spokane when I was growing up then eventually reduced it back to just Wednesday's @ noon. When we were out of school during the summer, that was the que to go home for lunch!

Most of the ones in Spokane were Federal Signal SD10's like this one pictured and some that looked like the Thunderbolt.

One neat thing about the cold war is all the cool technology it begat. For example the AT&T TD-2 microwave system, the DEW line, and the Victory siren (which is probably one of the loudest man-made sound generators ever made). I look forward to the day I can see one of these things in action. After all, how often do you see an air raid siren powered by a Chrysler Hemi ?

Now if you want to talk one of the brightest lights ever made we have to backtrack to WW2 which gave us the 1942 GE/Sperry 60" carbon-arc searchlight. I believe they are a touch shy of 1 billion candlepower (800+ million or so). I've seen these up close and they kick some serious ass.

The GE/Sperry searchlights and AA fire during the Battle of Los Angeles would have been a sight to behold. Unfortunately 6 or more people died due to "friendly" fire.
