Now that Valley Comm's use of 154.070 has been stopped, is there any way to hear the actual dispatches on the scanner. I can monitor the "shorts" and other radio traffic, but don't recall an actual dispatch where the initial dispatch giving the type of call and location of the incident. If it is broadcast is it on a new or special TG? Is there a solution? Are there any tones used for any of the departments Valley Comm dispatches for? I am using a Bearcat 245xlt.

I am in Auburn in the valley, so I am not that far from the Valley Comm facility itself if that makes any difference.
Many thanks,
Wayne

ValleyCom gives the dispatch info message on Fire 1, talkgroup 38448. For example:

"Engine 47 on Fire 3 for a smoke investigation. Westbound 518, east of the runway markers. Engine 47 on Fire 3 for a smoke investigation. Westbound 518, east of the runway markers. Fire One clear at 1618."

Then, on Fire 3, they'll give the short to the responding unit and the unit will conduct operations on that talk group.

There are no longer any tones broadcast, nor is there anyway to filter out the info for just one particular station or apparatus, unless you're decoding the pages.

This is where PDW Software comes in handy.

I have to ask: what is PDW someware and what does it do? I don't know nearly as much as others on the board, but am willing to learn.
Thank you,
Wayne

OK, I saw and understand that. I have also looked and found out that PDW software allows you to monitor pages. Now that we have established that, how does the PDW software work in relationship to a scanner, how are the computer and scanner linked together and where do you get the frequencies to monitor the pagers?

I suspect you need the cap codes that the pagers use?

I think what Wayne (and me) is missing is how you use PDW to monitor the pages if VC isn't toning out on VHF any more.

I think you monitor the frequency the pages go out on. The software decodes the data and so on.
The frequency listed on my FD pager is 15x.xxx

That is the same frequency my FD pager uses as well 15x.xxx

As an example:

One might use a dedicated scanner, with a discriminator tap, to monitor 15X.XXXX, the frequency that transmits the POCSAG paging data.

Then, once one is running the PDW software and monitoring the paging data stream, a filter could be set up, within PDW, that separates the pages for the station and/or apparatus one is interested in, either by simple TEXT or by CAPCODE. After this filter is set up, a .WAV file could play to alert the user or the PDW software could email a message with the page data to the users portable device.

Obviously, the voice data is not transmitted with the POCSAG, but it might be used to make one aware of pages that a particular station or apparatus receive.

This is a merely hypothetical solution. YMMV.

Does anyone know how to set up PDW to E-Mail? This would be cool to have messages sent to your cell phone. I opened up PDW's email feature and could not figure it out.

I tried to copy the screen, can't figure it out. If you open up PDW to at the top left under options is email option.

Yeah. I just looked at it.

SMTP - Is your outgoing mail server name.
To: - Self explanatory
From: - Self explanatory
And if your outgoing email server requires it, then supply your user name and password.
